Cummins Marine reports that its larger high speed engines continue to attract orders worldwide, including from owners repowering old vessels and bringing them up to the new EPA Tier 2 emissions standards. US towboats enjoy a long life, thanks to their time being spent in less-corrosive fresh water. One such vessel is the 1974-built Ann Peters, whose hull plating and framing remains sound. She narrowly survived the hurricane Katrina, being pushed up on the levee at New Orleans, after which, when welders were attaching pad-eyes to help return her to the water, a fire broke out and the boat was badly damaged.
