Leading this trend is engine manufacturer Waertsilae which has developed its 50DF engine for operation on both LNG boil off and diesel or heavy fuel oil though this is not the company's first experience of dual-fuel diesel propulsion of LNG tankers (see box). The combination of dual-fuel engine technology and electric propulsion system is said to give the LNG market a machinery concept that offers significant benefits compared to classical steam turbine installations and other currently emerging alternative machinery concepts for LNG carriers.
