The Wappen von Hamburg was the first of six newbuildings described as the 'world's safest tankers'. The so-called SCOT 8000 (Safety Chemical Oil Tanker) was designed by the Lindenau Werft in Kiel for the Hamburg-based owner Wappen Reederei and was built at the Romanian shipyard of Damen Shipyards Galatz. With its double-hull design and two separate propulsion systems, the 8,250DWT Wappen von Hamburg easily exceeds the safety regulations laid down by the IMO. Since entering into service in June 2003, the lead-ship has been joined by five sister ships, i.e. Wappen von Berlin, Muenchen, Dresden, Bremen and Leipzig, while a further two similar tankers will be delivered over the course of 2006 from the Romanian yard.
