The findings from Protecting America's Schools: A U.S. Secret Service Analysis of Targeted School Violence indicate that these types of tragedies are preventable. The U.S. Secret Service recommends schools implement mul-tidisciplinary threat assessment teams, with the support and involvement of law enforcement when appropriate. Threat assessments empower schools, law enforcement, and communities to work together proactively to prevent violence and other negative outcomes. This process should employ a low threshold of concern for behaviors that warrant an assessment and intervention. A student may pose a risk of harm to self or others even if no laws have been broken and no threats have been made. Law enforcement may be able to assist in providing interventions or supports before a student's behavior escalates to violence or criminal behavior.
