In 2011, the republic of Moldova arrested individuals attempting to sell several grams of highly enriched uranium. The sellers had an understanding of both the properties and potential use of the material. This attempt to traffic illicit nuclear material is a stark reminder of the ever-present threat of nuclear terrorism and the sophistication of nuclear smugglers. However, Moldova's ability to interdict the threat in that particular incident is a testament to the global nuclear security community's increased defenses and capabilities, and it highlights the continued need for international collaboration to counter nuclear terrorism.
