An article in the October 2008 issue of this magazine raises one of the most critical issues in the law enforcement community today-the problem of faulty eyewitness identification-and urges police chiefs to lead the discussion of reform. Highly publicized DNA exoneration cases, most of which involved mistaken eyewitness identifications, have focused public scrutiny on law enforcement procedures and challenged law enforcement practitioners both to reex-amine long-standing practices and to implement change that will reduce the likelihood of such misidentifications in the future. No one in the law enforcement profession has any interest in convicting the innocent.
