Bombardier and Transport for London have signed two contracts for new trains and maintenance. The first contract is to design, build and commission 45 four-car EMUs, which will replace the Class 315 units inherited when TfL took over lines in East London from May 31. The second contract covers maintenance of the new stock for a 35-year period. Together, the contracts are valued at £358million. The new trains, with 20-metre long vehicles, will be based on Bombardier's'Aventra' design, with walk-through carriages, air-conditioning and improved accessibility, together with reduced weight, energy consumption and maintenance costs. They will be built in Derby.
