Just weeks after taking over from First Capital Connect, Govia Thameslink Railway has criticised the Class 700 EMUs it is to be supplied with. Govia is unhappy to find that little provision has been made for tables or even seatback drop-down trays in the units, despite the fact that they will be running long distances to places such as King's Lynn, Peterborough, Bedford and the South Coast. Such an "obvious" provision should have been made, Govia executives believe. The fact that only a handful of the 1,140 Class 700 vehicles have been built by Siemens so far gives hope that a retrospective modification can be made to the majority of the fleet, but it is understood that the DfT, which ordered the trains, signed a contract containing no such provisions. If Govia wants the changes, therefore, Siemens is likely to insist on increased payment.
