Most of the remaining overnight sleeper trains in Japan operating on the country's classic 1067mm-narrow gauge network are to be withdrawn over the next few years. Media reports suggest that the'Akebono'(or'Dawn') service from Ueno station, near Tokyo, to Aomori, at the north of Japan's main Honshu island, will end in March 2014. A year later, the 'Hokutosei' service - linking Ueno with Sapporo, on Hokkaido island via the Seikan undersea tunnel -will be largely withdrawn in March 2015, but initially retained for some seasonal services.
