The return to traffic of No. 6990 Witherslack Hall is to be significantly accelerated. The Great Central Railway's target for the'Modified Hall' to be back in service is now July 2014. The boiler was lifted at Loughborough in mid-August 2011, and work towards replacement of stays progressed. However, in early October the boiler was sent to Tyseley to speed up the work and release Loughborough staff and volunteers to undertake other projects. Tyseley will remove the foundation ring, the lower 8in of the firebox outer wrapper, and the four rounded firebox corners. New stays will be fitted after firebox sections have been replaced. Overhauling the chassis will continue at Loughborough, with the wheelsets to be dropped to confirm the condition of the bottom end (thought to be fundamentally sound) and continued work on the removed bogie.
