The influx of new Class 377/6 EMUs on Southern workings has allowed the operator to withdraw a number of two-car Class 456 units. As of early November, six sets had been withdrawn, with all 24 due to be out of service by December 31. The Class 456s will transfer to South West Trains, and run as part of the 10-carriage strategy, most likely working with Class 455 units. A contract for their refurbishment has been won by Knorr-Bremse at Wolverton.The first train is expected to be in service in the spring. Internally, they will be refurbished in a similar style to the Class 455 units, with 2+2 seating, but there are no plans to reinstall toilets, removed by Southern.
