A temporary solution to a series of landslides that have closed the A890 road at Stromferry, east of Kyle of Lochalsh, is seeing road traffic sharing the railway line. On December 22,2011, more than 100 tons of rock blocked the road, leaving the line unaffected but forcing motorists to make a 140-mile detour. Holdfast rubber matting, as used on level crossings, has now been installed on the railway and a special road timetable is in operation around the train services, using convoy control. There is also a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes for road vehicles. An additional train service had been running for school pupils, but this will now cease.
