Derby station is to be rebuilt at a cost of £18m over the next 18 months. The existing station with its concrete canopies was completed in 1955, but the discovery in 2005 of deterioration in the concrete led to the pillars being boarded off with temporary supports being installed, for safety reasons. This has proved an eyesore and made the platforms more congested.
