摘要

REG who?, some readers may ask, but those who've been taking The Railway Magazine since the 1940s will know that this talented photographer's work first graced our front cover exactly 60 years ago. Mr Batten has just celebrated his 94th birthday and although he has carved a name for himself in the world of photography, it is his short career as a railwayman that has given him some of his most memorable experiences. He is, for example, one of the last men alive - if not the last - to have met both Nigel Gresley and Edward Thompson and he can still vividly recall those unforgettable days. "I left school at the age of 14 in 1928 and, two years later, entered the Stratford Works drawing office as a trainee draughtsman," he said. "One day, the motive power superintendent, J.P. Parker, summoned me to the office of mechanical engineer Edward Thompson to meet Mr Gresley.
