On most days there are just two - yes, two - freight trains in each direction going through the Channel Tunnel. The adjacent M20 motorway, on the other hand, carries enough lorries to fill 200 trains a day! The Editor has asked me to explain why we have got into this situation - ridiculous in both cost and environmental terms. For an answer - or an explanation at least - we must go back to the start of the Channel Tunnel project in the 1980s when, after much pressure from business, the then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, agreed that the Channel Tunnel could be built, provided that "not a penny of public money was spent on it". Those sentiments were even included in the Treaty of Canterbury, in which the UK and French Governments agreed to facilitate the construction and operation of the Tunnel.
