The unrebuilt Bulleid Light Pacifies are splendid engines with Class 5 route availability yet Class 8 performance. Having fired and driven No. 34072 on the Swanage Railway and No. 34081 on the Nene Valley, I decided to pit my wits against classmate No. 21C 123 Blackmoor Vale on the Bluebell line. This course was to be rather special for me, as it was run by Clive Groome, whose 'Footplate Days and Ways' organisation pioneered commercial driving courses back in 1983. Ex-Nine Elms engineman Clive is one of the most experienced steam drivers in the country and anyone signing up for one of his courses will be in excellent hands.
