Following January's feature on 'Declining Driver Standards', The Railway Magazine was invited to join a class of Virgin Trains Millennium drivers being put through a one-day course in defensive driving techniques - held on the privately-run Bo'ness & Kinnel Railway. With seven courses of ten VT Millennium drivers now passed out from the three schools, and a pass rate prior to final route learning of 99 per cent, it was decided that, before drivers could take on a train of their own, they should attend a special 'add-on' course on handling a train under adverse rail conditions. Although the handling of trains under all rail conditions is part of the standard training it was felt important that trainees, with little 'at the front' experience, should see the effects of low wheel-rail adhesion on even a slow-moving train.
