In Understanding Our Being, John W. Carlson overcomes this pedagogical dilemma by dividing his subject matter into arguably the three most significant aspects of reality: first, issues dealing with the natural or scientific realm of reality and its limits in part 1; second, issues dealing with the supernatural or religious realm, primarily with God, in part 3; and third, issues dealing with the human person, that supreme created intersection of the natural and supernatural realms, in part 2. [...] Carlson's point in a nutshell: he maintains that, although the neurophysiological operations of the brain might be a necessary condition for consciousness it can never be considered as sufficient.
