摘要

This book amounts to a fascinating critique of the idea that there is a particularly close relationship between the US and the UK in the conduct of counterinsurgencies. Not only is it a worthy addition to Mumford's previous work, but to the literature on counterinsurgency in general. He opens his work just after the Second World War in Palestine, before moving on to focus on the Malaya campaign, often seen to be an exemplar of British counterinsurgency, and Cyprus, where the results were rather more ambiguous. It then proceeds to Vietnam (where the British involvement and lessons from Malaya are foregrounded), southern Arabia and Northern Ireland. Finally, the book sweeps forward elegantly into the more recent wars of the post-9/11 period.
