NATO's defence and deterrence posture in the Atlantic Ocean is essential for the credibility of transatlantic security cooperation. Reform of the command arrangements, contingency planning, maritime strategy, training and exercise policy and greater investment in relevant capabilities for high-intensity warfare are required. The allies in the area should improve their cooperation and coordination. An Atlantic command could form a hub for discussion of political and military issues relating to defence in this area. The objective is to maintain deterrence, stability and security in the area and this will have a positive impact on the security situation in the rest of Europe. Security in the Atlantic is what ties the US and Canada directly to European security and this has to be a seamless connection.
