If Azar Gat's War in Human Civilization (Oxford University Press, 2008) is too rich and scholarly a dish for you, then War: What is it Good For? will provide a more digestible treatment of the role that conflict has played throughout history. Classicist Ian Morris - as with his previous work, Why the West Rules - For Now (Profile Books, 2011) - has ventured forth to cover all of human history, whether recorded or merely traceable through archaeological remains or guesswork based on primate behaviour or anthropological analogy. Whether one agrees with the main or subsidiary arguments, this is an ambitious undertaking and a thoroughly impressive yet easily readable work. Aimed mainly at a non-academic readership, the work nevertheless stands up to academic scrutiny: references are included at the end along with a voluminous bibliography.
