James Holland's new book, Burma '44, is actually about the Battle of the Admin Box, which took place in the Arakan Peninsula. Very few British readers will know the historical significance of the Arakan, which lies astride the Burma-Bangladesh border, and at the time of writing has, for both states, an amber Foreign Office warning that discourages all but the most essential travel. In this golden age of battlefield tours, most Second World War enthusiasts would probably opt for the more comfortable orchards of Normandy, with a rug and a large picnic hamper, and avoid the troubled border region of west Burma. As a result the Arakan and the Admin Box have become almost invisible on the lists of TV dramas and celebrity explorations that define our recollection of the past.
