Paul Staniland is a social historian who looks at groups rather than people, behaviours rather than personalities and patterns rather than events. In Networks of Rebellion, he uses this approach to examine the organisation of insurgencies, undertaking a scientific analysis of demographics, ethnicity and social culture. His aim appears to be to offer a different way of explaining organisational cohesion and the collapse of revolutionary organisations, and thus, potentially, to elicit clear guidance on countering insurgents through this methodology. Staniland even puts forward several variants of possible solutions in tabular format. If only combating insurgencies were so simple. Nevertheless, there is much to be gleaned from Networks of Rebellion.
