For Barack Obama, running for election in late 2008, the war in Afghanistan appeared to be 'good' only in comparison to America's war in Iraq, and mostly in respect of its necessity. In his campaign, Obama repeatedly emphasised that Afghanistan was the central front of the war against Al-Qa'ida, and that branching off into war in Iraq had been a catastrophic distraction. On coming into office, however, Obama discovered that Afghanistan was as bad as a war could be - completely lacking strategic direction, hugely wasteful and fought on behalf of a corrupt government and resentful people. Suffice to say, the title of this book is more than a little ironic.
