摘要

There are vast amounts of analysis available in historical accounts and conflict-studies literature relating to the First Malayan Emergency from 1948 until its end, declared by the Malaysian government in 1960. Insights drawn from the defeat of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) have almost invariably been incorporated into subsequent counter-insurgency (COIN) theory, doctrine and practice - acknowledging of course that every insurgency is sui generis. But the 'long march' of the MCP leader, Chin Peng, and the remaining loyal insurgents to southern Thailand was not the end of the story. There was a second phase that began in 1968 and continued until the signing of a Peace Accord in 1989 by what was then the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) with the government of Malaysia at Hat Yai in southern Thailand.
