The summer of 2014 has highlighted once again the diffuse and complex nature of security threats in today's world. After events in Ukraine earlier this year prompted many commentators to resurrect Cold War-era defence fault lines, the continued rise of ISIS in the Middle East - with its prominent display of Western-born terrorists - and the ebola epidemic in West Africa are just two reminders of the multifaceted and changing nature of threats to global stability.
