For the French and the Germans, Verdun carries the emotional baggage that the Somme carries for the British. For them, Verdun has come to be the shorthand for all the horrors of the First World War. The political symbolism of this carefully planned campaign - more than just a battle, given its length - was clear well in advance; indeed, it was not least for its symbolic importance to France that the area surrounding the small city of Verdun was chosen by the German leadership as the most important killing fields of the Great War. Paul Jankowski himself ponders whether one can call this a battle, drawn out as it was. The beginning can be pinpointed to Monday 21 February 1916, but the subsequent, relentless mutual pounding dragged on and on, only to fizzle out in December, having overlapped since July with the carnage on the Somme, where French forces were being deviated to join their British comrades-in-arms.
