摘要

The days of the Non-Aligned Movement that united us after 'colonialism are gone. China is no longer a fellow under-developed economy - it is the world's second-biggest, capable of the same forms of exploitation as the west. It is a significant contributor to Africa's deindustrialization and underdevelopment.' Delivered in the august pages of the Financial Times in March this year, the searing indictment by the now former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, highlights the growing shift in perceptions about China's influence in the developing world. It also crystallises the view delivered from the ground in two new books focusing on China's role in the developing world. The point they deliver is not only the well-trodden trope that China's no-strings-attached approach to investment is undermining the spread of democratic governance, but that the scale of China's appetites is reshaping the world.
