There is no doubt that Dalrymple is good value. His style is mellifluous - poetic, even - and he has the ability to conjure up word pictures as ornate, detailed and delicately tinted as any Persian miniature or Mughal lattice work. Close your eyes and you can imagine yourself reading this book in a cool marble arbour in the magnificent Lake Palace Hotel in Udaipur, or perhaps breathing in the scent of sandalwood on a houseboat in Kashmir.
