摘要

This edited volume aims to provide a better understanding of the issues brought about by the rapid infusion of private contractors supporting American expeditionary operations. The US has a long history of using contractors in support of its overseas interventions -a historical practice that was driven by government policy, regardless of political persuasion. But in fighting wars on two fronts post-9/11, and with its military capacity stretched to breaking point, the US has used unprecedented levels of private-sector support. Without doing so, it would have faced the difficult prospect of having to accept that more had been undertaken than could be managed with the uniformed forces available.
