The Second World War produced four great British field marshals. Three have statues on the green beside the Ministry of Defence Main Building, next door to RUSI. Field Marshal Earl Wavell is not so honoured: indeed, a distant, cerebral introvert, it is doubtful whether Wavell would have impressed today's Army Officer Selection Board or survived twenty-first-century Sandhurst. However, Colonel Raugh's book, a reprint of a work first published in 1993, presents a case for Wavell being the cleverest field marshal of all: a deep thinker on military affairs, effective strategist and encourager of lasting tactical evolution, and a man who engaged and held the main Axis armies in the main land theatre of the early years of the war.
