The doyen of Cold War history has continued a quite remarkable career with a magnificent biography of the most celebrated - and most talked about -American foreign-policy thinker of his generation: George F Kennan. No book on US diplomatic thinking has been more awaited. Indeed, after Gaddis, there is little I suspect that can now be said about Kennan - this enigmatic, elusive and at times deeply contradictory figure: one who apparently authored a key strategic concept in 1947 and then spent the rest of his life trying to explain to the bemused and the sceptical what he 'really' meant when he not only argued for a long-term, patient containment of the Soviet Union, but also that such a strategy would over time lead to the Soviet system's decay.
