This might not be the sort of book that readers of the RUSI Journal would normally add to their reading pile. Despite the title, it contains little of obvious relevance to those interested in military matters and their context. But Merchant, Soldier, Sage is innovative, thought-provoking and broad in scope. It is a carefully worked-out, and extremely ambitious thesis giving Priestland's views on Life, the Universe and Everything -and pace Douglas Adams, the answer is not forty-two.
