Our military exists to secure national interests. It can do so through outright conflict at a time of war, or by supplementing the UK's diplomatic efforts in peacetime. Yet in each and every case, a clear discerning of the country's national interest is required. If not informed by clear political guidance, assets and personnel will be applied in a haphazard manner, with ineffective and counter-productive results. Strategic direction from political superiors is therefore essential if our armed forces are to be successful. Defence reviews serve that purpose, by renewing the connection between specific military endeavours and broader strategic goals.
