By rights, the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft should probably never have made it into US military service. At times, the odds seemed just too stacked against it. The fact that it has done so, despite turning into perhaps the most controversial modern US military aviation programme in the process, makes it a compulsory case study of the political, economic and military vagaries of the US defence procurement process.
