While the war in Afghanistan and its now half-forgotten cousin in Iraq have drawn some attention to counter-insurgency, to date the general literature remains surprisingly thin. Perhaps the reticence of British authors may change when Sir John Chilcot reports. In the US, however, analysts and writers have been looking at the challenges posed by 'wars among the people' for some time. Tom Ricks' The Gamble (2008) and Linda Robinson's Tell Me How This Ends (2009) have been reviewed in the Journal before, and attention has been paid to that group focused on the narrative of the Petraeus-led transformation of the US Army between 2005 and 2008.
