In recent years the quality of British military doctrine has been hotly debated by scholars and practitioners, not least in this Journal. Yet few, if any, have asked in a systematic way the question posed by Claudia Harvey and Mark Wilkinson: do any officers actually read it? That question probably does not need to be asked of David Richards and Robert Fry, current Chief of the General Staff and former Royal Marine lieutenant general respectively, who provide unique insights on two important new contributions to the literature on insurgency in our special review section.
