It is testament to the legacy of the Second World War that more than sixty years after its end, there is still no apparent let up in the number of books, articles, films and television programmes on the subject. Unsurprisingly, there are those who now wonder whether there is anything left to say on the matter. The answer, of course, is yes, there is plenty. Every historian is, to a degree, a product of the age in which he is writing, and so with each new generation come new perspectives and new approaches to the subject. Moreover, for those who are prepared to roll up their sleeves, travel the globe and carry out serious archival research, there are untapped riches aplenty. As any historian worth his salt will confirm, it is not hard to find all manner of documents metaphorically covered in dust which have clearly never been looked at since they were first put away in a pale cardboard wallet back in 1946.
