摘要

This is an unusual book from an unusual source. Moreover, it is remarkably pertinent to the current American predicament. Bacevich's central argument, as the title indicates, is that a new and vigorous militarism has taken root in the United States that is both unusual and dangerous. Back in 1993, Clinton's new Director of Central Intelligence, James Woolsey, was asked at Senate confirmation hearings to characterize the security situation facing the United States after the Cold War. He replied that they had slain the dragon but now lived in a jungle full of poisonous snakes. Taming the jungle would be the core issue for the next decade or more, and much of Bacevich's book is about the vigour and persistence with which that jungle is being tamed.
