I walk down Whitehall too often for comfort, and have my eyes assaulted by that black block inscribed to 'The Women of World War II'. I find it curious: are women not commemorated, with men, at the Cenotaph? What about the women of the First World War? (Notwithstanding Edith Cavell, well-remembered in St Martin's Place.) What about the women of the Second World War who are still alive? But if you can have Haig sitting on a large horse in Whitehall, and Slim, Alanbrooke and Montgomery glaring out from the green on the eastern side of the road, not to mention Boadicea outside Portcullis House, then why not the 'Women of World War II', even if their service does seem to be commemorated by clothes hanging up in a blackened changing room?
