摘要

It was a civilian who said: 'You can do anything with bayonets except sit on them.' Frontline soldiers in the First and Second World Wars have been less convinced. Jean Norton Cru, of the French Army, claimed that between October 1914 and November 1918 he never once saw a bayonet being used, or a bayonet with blood on its blade, and having made an exhaustive analysis of all allegedly first-hand accounts of trench warfare published in French prior to 1928 he concluded that none of the better accounts of fighting mentioned bayonets at all, whereas those which contained palpable lies and exaggerations on other topics were full of 'boucheries truculentes a l'arme blanche' (truculent butcheries with cold steel). In the British Army it was often said that nobody was ever killed with a bayonet unless they already had their arms raised.
