Tired of the hopeless fight at Gallipoli, the French seized on Bulgaria's entry into the war and Serbia's collapse in September 1915 to re-direct their troops on Gallipoli to Salonika (in September-October 1915) where France, and not Britain, dominated the planning and execution of operations. Having said this, France did replace the French division on Gallipoli, but the thrust of French military operations in the region was now to be Salonika. From 29 September, the bulk of France's army on Gallipoli embarked for Salonika. On the peninsula, 21,000 troops remained to show some political support for Britain's ill-fated expedition to Gallipoli and, as one French author comments, 'continued to do their duty, even if they did not feel like doing so'.
