The Vietnam War remains a conflict much cited by politicians and commentators, yet is fundamentally poorly understood, particularly in terms of the specific reasons the US intervention was ultimately unsuccessful. Max Hastings's book Vietnam: An Epic Tragedy, 1945-1975 is a timely reassessment and will likely become one of the definitive accounts of the conflict. The book offers much fresh insight, particularly through first-hand conversations with combatants on both sides, by bringing to the forefront the experience of the Vietnamese.
