The distinguished US military historian, Edward M Coffman, has commented in his own reflections on military history how rare it is for practitioners to discuss how they 'do' history. Brian Bond addresses this neglect in his brief, beguiling and sometimes moving memoir, Military Historian: My Part in the Birth and Development of War Studies, 1966-2016. It charts his own life against the backdrop of virtually no vacancies for positions in the study of military history, when his career began, through the great expansion, especially over the past 30 years, of interest in the subject. From the University of Oxford and King's College London, seeds have spread to the universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Salford, Leeds, Hull, Aberystwyth, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Reading and Kent, among others. Even so, residual dislike of the subject still surfaces. In the 1980s Bond was asked by an undergraduate at the University of Oxford why had he wasted his life studying war (p. 70).
