The idea of togetherness among Allies and the commonality of purpose and interests remain strong. No member states have seriously considered leaving the Alliance and additional nations seek to become members. US leadership is indispensable and continues to play a key role in policy and defence. While the future role of the US has become more unpredictable, we should assume that it will sustain its interest and military footprint in Europe to deal with Russia and terrorism, and to retain Europe as a partner to counter an increasingly powerful China. Indeed, partnership with Europe is indispensable for the US to maintain its central position in international affairs.
