Ben Barry's Blood, Metal and Dust: How Victory Turned into Defeat in Afghanistan and Iraq provides a compelling and comprehensive narrative of the two recent 21s' century wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The author's analysis is critical and commensurately bleak. In forensic detail, Barry highlights the multiple challenges militaries faced in adapting to unexpectedly ferocious and skilled opponents in both theatres of operations. Significantly, he singles out the British Army for learning too slowly, and takes prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown severely to task for their follies. More broadly, he chronicles a series of policy mistakes in Washington, London, Baghdad and Kabul that led to failures in Iraq and Afghanistan despite the investment of so much blood, treasure and reputation. Correspondingly frankly, he addresses a wide range of military issues, including doctrine, equipment and force levels. Yet, the clue to understanding the importance of this book, and, equally, its potential limitation, lies in the subtitle: 'How Victory Turned into Defeat'.
