'A mysterious call is made for immediate volunteers for parachute duties', wrote 21-year-old British Army cadet Reginald Hibbert, in a secret diary entry of 25 July 1943. The lower-middle-class Londoner, whisked away by the war from the University of Oxford where he was studying history, duly volunteered, 'in hope of some cheap thrills' (p. 45).
