There are numerous reasons why the UK should bolster its bilateral defence procurement relationship with France; this relationship offers an effective way to reset UK-EU defence relations in a post-Brexit world. By focusing on Anglo-French bilateralism, the UK can demonstrate its continued willingness to cooperate with Europe and its relevance as a reliable partner. It can also serve as an olive branch to smooth over tensions that emerged during the Brexit process. From an economic perspective, this is a pragmatic option that should be embraced. Bilateral procurement offers a way to keep manufacturing British while reducing costs. The benefits of increased cooperation to UK industry are self-evident. It is possible for the UK arms industry to achieve a new level of dominance in the European market if the same cooperation that was seen with the OneMBDA project is replicated in other sectors. Enhanced cooperation also has the potential to remove one of the UK's primary rivals in the arms export market, providing higher profits and a boost to the trade of Global Britain. It is crucial that the government take advantage of these opportunities while it can. Cooperation must be sustained and built on to further UK interests in Europe. Isolationism will achieve little. Bilateralism is the pragmatic alternative. If the UK wishes to remain relevant in the 21st century, it must make full use of all its existing relationships. Failure to do so would be a dereliction of duty and detrimental to its interests.
