I can find out how much sodium is in a candy bar from the wrapper. New cars have an indication of their fuel efficiency, and Christmas lights have a UL tag. But how can a computer user gain insight into their software? Can the developer access this software remotely? Does it have copyrighted software that impairs my intellectual property if it is incorporated in my system? And from the developer side, what information could be furnished to communicate the quality of their work and products to acquirers? What information can help the software buyer decide which product is safer or most appropriate for their business? This panel session will gather users and experts to discuss possible software label theory, delivery, and content, in addition to the benefits (and cautions) of having a software label. The goal of such a label is to present relevant information to empower consumers to make the right decisions. There is one possible model in the CESG Claims Tested Mark, and many proposals including Garfinkel's "Pure Software Act", and Lindstrom's software security data sheets. Some possible label criteria are that the software labeling and reporting are voluntary (not legislated), absolutely simple to produce, and content should be normalized across different scopes. Possible criteria for contents are that the facts are verifiable, objective, repeatable, and unambiguous.
