The world's first nuclear power station, a small-capacity atomic installation constructed on the territory of the Laboratory B scientific nuclear center (at present, the Leipunskii Energy Physics Institute State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation) established in 1946 and situated at a distance of 100 km from Moscow, became a symbol for peaceful use of atomic energy and the date of its official commissioning on June 27, 1954, has become the generally recognized birthday of nuclear power engineering.
